who has the megaphone?A protest of All Saints’ Episcopal Church by an anti-gay group from Kansas drew more than 100 counter-protesters to City Hall this afternoon.
Sometime before 4:30 p.m., roughly a half dozen protesters from the Topeka-based Westboro Baptist Church began their protest on West Church Street. The counter-protesters surrounded them on the City Hall lawn, across the street from All Saints’ Episcopal Church.
At approximately 4:45, the WBC protesters headed for their car, parked on North Court Street.
Police escorted them as the counter-protesters gave chase and eventually cornered the WBC car in an alley off West Third Street.
Tensions flared briefly when police arrested a counter-protester after she struck a minivan trying to leave the area. The van was apparently unrelated to either group.
The counter-protest ended at about 5:15, when police were able to clear a path through the throng and escort the Westboro Baptist Church car out along West Third Street.
Frederick Police Chief Kim Dine said he was only aware of the one arrest, which he believed to be of a juvenile. The police were acting to protect everyone’s rights, he said.
“We managed (the protest) in a peaceful way,” Dine said. “The people left when they said they were going to leave.”
The Westboro Baptist Church has previously announced its members intend to picket Sunday's National Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service in Emmitsburg. A protest of All Saints’ Episcopal Church by an anti-gay group from Kansas drew more than 100 counter-protesters to City Hall this afternoon.
